Earlier this year, Detroit based Will Sessions got together with Elzhi of Slum Village to release the “Elmatic” project, a recreation of Nas’ classic “Illmatic”. (More on the project at Loop Detroit.)

Truth be told, I was a bit of a naysayer, despite the high quality. I couldn’t shake the fact someone actually recreated “Illmatic”!

That said, I can’t deny that it’s a fantastic body of work. In fact, even DJ Premier thinks so.

“The Elmatic Instrumentals” are out September 27 on CD, 180g Vinyl, and digital formats. Recommended.
